A tourist from Taiwan was arrested on Saturday for taking upskirt videos of females in different areas of Macau, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Kam Ka Kit said during a regular press conference yesterday.
Kam said the suspect surnamed Jhan is in his forties. He told the police that he works for an engineering company in Taiwan.
One of the victims is a 30-year-old female surnamed Li. Her husband surnamed Lin, who witnessed the incident, is about 30 years old. Both are tourists from the mainland, Kam said.
Jhan entered Macau on Friday. Soon after his arrival he took a number of upskirt videos with his smartphone in different areas of Macau.
At about 7:30 p.m. in a casino-hotel resort’s shopping mall in Cotai on Saturday, Jhan tried to take an upskirt video but he was seen by the victim’s husband. The couple caught him red-handed and reported the case to the police at about 8:30 p.m.
Police officers arrived at scene and took Jhan to a police station for questioning. At the police station 17 upskirt videos were found on his smartphone involving seven different female victims – and Li was one of them.
Besides Li, Jhan took an upskirt video of a female victim at Taoyuan International Airport in Taipei, while the obscene videos of the other five women were taken in different areas of Macau.
Jhan told the police that he committed the crime “out of curiosity”.
The police yesterday transferred Jhan to the Public Prosecution Office (MP) where he faces possible arraignment on charges of illegal recording and photographing, and invasion of privacy.
According to Article 186 of the Macau Penal Code, violating a person’s privacy is punishable by up to two years behind bars, or a fine.
