The Social Welfare Bureau (IAS) receives about 10 cases of alcohol abuse per year and has been cooperating with various non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and medical staff to deal with alcohol problems in the city, Richard Cheang Io Tat, chief of the bureau’s Drug Addiction Treatment and Rehabilitation Department, said yesterday.

The bureau held a press conference at the Healthy Life Education Corner in Areia Preta about a string of events linked to the International Day Against Drug Abuse & Illicit Trafficking. It was attended by about 30 officials, NGO and media representatives.

By resolution 42/112 of December 7 1987, the UN General Assembly decided to observe June 26 as the International Day Against Drug Abuse & Illicit Trafficking as an expression of its determination to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse, according to the United Nations’ website.
