Installing lockers and bookshelves in classrooms or in school corridors are the best short-term solution to tackle the overweight schoolbag issue that local pupils are suffering from, Macau Jiangmen Communal Society Executive Vice President Carmen Lo Choi In said yesterday.
Lo made the comments in a media briefing on the association’s premises in the Chamber of Commerce Building, following the recent discussion about heavy schoolbags at the Education and Youth Affairs Bureau (DSEJ).
According to Lo, most pupils under 10 need to carry schoolbags weighing over 5 kilos to school that have textbooks, exercise books, equipment for Chinese calligraphy and sports kits for other extra-curricular activities, on top of dictionaries and laptops in them, which she said that “even parents might not be able to carry”.
