A woman lost 690,000 yuan (806,500 patacas) in a phone scam last week, the Judiciary Police (PJ) said in a statement yesterday.

According to the statement, the woman received a phone call from an unknown number last Tuesday, in which the caller claimed that his name was “Ah King” and the woman thought she recognised the voice as being that of her friend with that name.

The victim received another call from the same person on the next day, in which “Ah King” told her that he and his friends had been arrested in Zhuhai after using a prostitution service, and that he needed 90,000 yuan to get bailed out. He asked the woman to deposit the amount into an account in a bank in Gongbei. According to the statement, the man later continued to use different reasons to ask the woman to deposit more money into the account, reaching 690,000 yuan in total.
