The non-establishment New Macau Association (NMA) petitioned the government yesterday afternoon, urging it to withdraw its controversial bill on the setting-up of the Macau Special Administrative Region Investment and Development Fund.

Several NMA members handed in the petition to an official outside Government Headquarters. They did so a few hours before the government announced the bill’s withdrawal from tomorrow’s plenary session’s agenda.

Lawmaker-cum-activist Sulu Sou Ka Hou, a vice-president of the association, told reporters after handing in the petition that the public lacked information on the fund due to the government’s “low” transparency, adding there was a rumour that either Chief Executive Fernando Chui Sai On or Secretary for Economy and Finance Lionel Leong Vai Tac would head the fund company.
