Hundreds of senior citizens celebrated Hong Kung’s birthday with a large “basin feast” dinner yesterday in front of Hong Kung Temple in Rua de Cinco de Outubro.
Basin feast (also known as “poon choi” in Cantonese) is a traditional Cantonese dish that consists of layers of seafood, meat and vegetables in a big bowl and shared between the people at the table... The dish is usually served on special occasions and celebrations.
There are many versions about the origin of Hong Kung. According to Radio Television Hong Kong’s (RTHK) website, some believe that he was a general from the Han Dynasty called Li Lie. Some say that he was the first king of the Southern Song while others think that he was a soldier who drowned in a river.
