In a statement yesterday, the Health Bureau (SSM) urged residents not to connect the exhaust pipes of their liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) water heaters to the shared exhaust ducts running vertically along bathrooms in residential flats of different floors in their residential buildings.
The statement came after a carbon monoxide poisoning case last week in a residential building involving a woman and her daughter, which was caused by this kind of exhaust pipe connection.
According to the statement, the two victims were sleeping in their separate bedrooms in the family flat in a low-rise residential building in Travessa dos Becos – an alley near Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro (commonly known as San Ma Lou) – last Monday night, during which all the windows of the flat were closed, while the doors of the two bedrooms were open, so that the two females could enjoy the cool air from the air conditioner installed in the living room.
