A mainlander lost a pair of jade bracelets that he said were worth 65 million yuan in a HK$10 million gambling loan scam, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Choi Ian Fai said during a regular press conference yesterday.

According to Choi, the 41-year-old local suspect is surnamed Chan. He told the police that he sells “dead chips” (non-negotiable chips) for a junket operator in local casinos. The suspect, who had an accomplice, is a 48-year-old man, told the police that he is a businessman. Both the victim and the suspect are ethnic Fujianese who have known each for over 9 years, Choi said. No information on the suspect’s accomplice, who was still at large at the time of the press conference yesterday afternoon, was released.

Choi said that the victim travelled to Macau last week with six friends to gamble in a casino in Zape. Before their arrival, the victim got in touch with Chan through a middleman who turned out to be the latter’s accomplice. The victim told them that he wanted to borrow HK$10 million to gamble in Macau.
