Judiciary Police (PJ) Director Sit Chong Meng said yesterday that this year up until last Thursday, 16 university students – including a postgraduate student – enrolled in Macau became victims of reported phone scams in which fraudsters pretended to be officials, involving a total loss of over five million patacas.

Sit made the remarks at the PJ headquarters in Zape during a meeting between PJ officers and representatives from the local higher education sector about their joint efforts to prevent students from falling victim to phone scams.

Sit said that the number of reported phone scams has been on a downward trend over the past three years.
