The Macau Customs Service said in a statement yesterday that a 70-year-old local man in an electric wheelchair attempted to smuggle 3,200 cigarettes into Macau via the Barrier Gate border checkpoint on Monday, with some of the cigarettes hidden in different parts of his wheelchair, while the remainder were concealed in his bag and around different parts of his body.
At around 8 a.m. on Monday, customs officers found that the man, who was passing through the green channel in his electric wheelchair, was acting suspiciously, the statement said, adding that the man was attempting to “stay hidden in the crowd to avoid customs officers’ detection”.
The statement said that consequently the customs officers intercepted the man and told him to proceed to the luggage examination area, where they found the 3,200 untaxed cigarettes in the storage space beneath the wheelchair’s seat, under the chair’s cushion, in his bag and around different parts of his body.
