Members oppose high-rise next to mosque

Most of the opinions raised during yesterday’s meeting of the government-appointed Urban Planning Committee agreed with the legal conditions proposed by the Lands, Transport and Public Works Bureau (DSSOPT) for the redevelopment of a plot of land on which the Instituto Salesiano school campus stands, Secretary for Transport and Public Works Raimundo do Rosario said yesterday.

Under the proposed legal conditions, the school will not be legally bound to preserve an over century-old building on its campus, regardless of calls by a number of alumni for the perseveration of the building due to its perceived historical and architectural value.

Instituto Salesiano, which was founded by Fr Louis Versiglia in 1906, comprising primary and secondary school sections, is located opposite Sao Lourenço Church.
