WELLINGTON – The Chinese embassy in New Zealand held a reception yesterday at the National Museum of New Zealand in Wellington to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Macau’s return to the motherland.

Delivering an opening speech at the reception which was attended by over 200 people, Ambassador Wu Xi noted that this year marks the 20th anniversary of Macau’s return to the motherland. In the past two decades, “One Country, Two Systems” and “Macau people governing Macau” have been faithfully and fully implemented since the Chinese government resumed the exercise of sovereignty over Macau on December 20, 1999.

She noted that Macau’s GDP has maintained a track of steady growth, hitting almost US$55 billion last year, around eight times the GDP of 1999. The GDP per capita is now US$82,000, ranking third among world cities according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and almost five times that of 1999.
