President Xi Jinping’s wife Peng Liyuan visited the Macau Institute for Tourism Studies (IFTM) main campus on the peninsula yesterday, the tertiary education institution said in a statement yesterday.

According to the statement, Peng and Winnie Fok Wai-fun, the wife of Chief Executive Fernando Chui Sai On, visited the campus on Mong Há Hill yesterday afternoon. During her nearly 50-minute visit Peng and Fok were escorted by IFTM President Fanny Vong Chuk Kwan and her team. They visited several facilities, such as wine and tea classrooms, a pastry kitchen and a trainee restaurant.

Vong told reporters after the visit that Peng cares about students’ lives and learning environments in Macau. During the visit, Peng encouraged students to study hard, in order to pay back to the country and local society. She also encouraged the IFTM to continue its upmost efforts to cultivate more professional talents for the development of the tourism industry.

Vong said she felt honoured to have acted as Peng’s escort. She described her as “a very charming, graceful and intelligent lady, and she is very friendly”.

IFTM students gave a demonstration on how to cook Macanese cuisine and prepare Portuguese egg tarts. Peng and Fok tried their hands at making Portuguese egg tarts, the statement pointed out.

Peng, a singer and performing artist by profession, married Xi in September 1987.
