The Macau Post Daily is the oldest and highest circulation English-language newspaper of the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR). So far our team has published about 30,000 articles about the MSAR, which celebrated its 20th anniversary yesterday, in the past 15 years – three-quarters of the MSAR history.

Since its launch in August 2004, The Macau Post Daily has focused on factual, accurate and balanced reporting and stayed clear of hype, spin and unwarranted speculation.

We have always aimed to adhere to the journalistic principles of attribution, i.e. telling our readers where the information in our articles comes from and separation of news from views. Both principles are increasingly ignored by media worldwide, resulting in the notorious proliferation of fake news and political activism masquerading as journalism.

Our news photos always come with captions because they offer our readers crucial information about who’s doing what, when, where and – sometimes – even why (journalism’s time-tested 5 Ws).

Our editorial guidelines are based on the “One China” and “One Country, Two Systems” principles that are the political foundations of the MSAR. Of course, the “One China” includes Taiwan.

Apart from local news, our newspaper also focuses on national news, i.e. articles about the mainland, Taiwan and Hong Kong as well as, more recently, the Greater Bay Area (GBA). Our coverage also includes commentary about the nation’s latest developments.

Our factual approach to reporting means that we are calling a spade a spade: Protesters throwing petrol bombs and vandalising property are rioters, and that’s what we call them in our reports.

Besides, The Macau Post Daily is the world’s only English-language newspaper that publishes a daily page about news and views from the Portuguese-speaking world. This is our modest contribution to the further development of Macau’s role as a hub for relations between China and Portuguese-speaking countries.

Looking beyond the MSAR’s 20th anniversary, we can promise our readers and advertisers that we will remain faithful to professional journalism’s principles of factuality, objectivity and fairness. – Harald Brüning
