Beijing supports HK, Macau to curb novel coronavirus spread

A spokeswoman for the Hong Kong and MacauAffairs Office of the State Council has voiced support for the nation’s twospecial administrative regions (SARs) to curb the spread of the novelcoronavirus.

   The central authorities have paid closeattention to the spread of the virus in Hong Kong and Macau, as well as thesafety and health conditions of residents in the SARs, spokeswoman Xu Luyingtold reporters in Beijing on Tuesday.

  The mainland has taken active steps to assist the SAR governments inpreventing and controling the spread, including arranging visits by Hong Kongand Macau experts to Wuhan, the hardest-hit city of the epidemic, andsupporting and cooperating with the SAR governments in taking active preventionand control measures, Xu said.

   Inaddition, the mainland authorities have also discussed with the SAR governmentsother measures including suspending visits by mainland tourists to the tworegions, strengthening border quarantine measures, adjusting flight schedulesbetween the mainland and the two regions, and suspending railway trafficbetween the mainland and Hong Kong, Xu said.

   Xunoted that the office will continue supporting the two regions' governments tostrengthen their coordination and communication with the mainland's relevantdepartments and local governments, adding that all kinds of assistance will beprovided to the SARs to help them carry out scientific and targeted measures,curb the outbreak, step up monitoring, treat infected patients in time, andsafeguard their residents' safety and health.
