The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) said in a statement yesterday that it is monitoring the outbreak of the influenza A virus subtype N5N1 in Vietnom’s Tra Vinh province, pointing out that H5N1 is “highly pathogenic”.

The bureau said that based on local import records, Macau has not recently imported any poultry products from the affected area.

The bureau pledged to ensure that all poultry products sold in Macau are safe.

According to local laws and regulations, all imported fresh food must be inspected and quarantined before being sold in Macau, and proper health certificates must be presented in order to prove that the imported products are not from an infected area and are suitable for consumption by humans, the statement added.

According to a IAM statement last week, the bureau has also been monitoring other bird flu outbreaks, the H5N6 found in Vietnam’s provinces of Thanh Hóa and Nghệ An, and the H5N8 in the Hohenlohe region of Baden-Württemberg state in southern Germany.
