Secretary for Security Wong Sio Chak said in a statement released by his office yesterday that the security forces should learn from Saturday’s computer glitch at the city’s border checkpoints, pledging to improve their ability to co-ordinate preparation for, and response to emergencies.
Automated passenger clearance systems – also known as e-channels – at the checkpoints did not work properly between 5:18 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. that day due to a computer malfunction, according to a Public Security Police (PSP) statement released on Saturday night after the incident.
The police have a “backup system” to deal with contigencies like that but it was not launched due to technical issues, the PSP statement added.
