Macau's exports and imports fell last month, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) announced today.
According to a DSEC statement, total exports fell 24.8 percent to 1.15 billion patacas (US$143 million) in January. While domestic exports rose 9.8 percent to 153 million patacas, re-exports fell 28.3 percent to 995 million patacas. Re-exports accounted for 86.6 percent of total exports. Some 72.9 percent of Macau's exports were shipped to Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland.
Imports dipped 3.6 percent to 8.48 billion patacas, resulting in a merchandise trade deficit of 7.33 billion patacas. About 39.1 percent of Macau's imports came from mainland China and Hong Kong. Italy and France accounted for 13.4 and 12.3 percent of total imports respectively.
Food and beverage imports - Macau's main import segment - fell 16.5 percent to 1.24 billion patacas. Garment and footwear imports dropped 10.9 percent to 900 million patacas.
