The Macau Correctional Services Bureau (DSC) has announced that visitations to the prison and juvenile detention centre will be resumed on Wednesday, "taking into account the development of the novel coronavirus pneumonia epidemic and citizens' needs for public services."

The visitations were suspended early last month in response to the COVID-19 threat.

Eight of Macau's 10 novel coronavirus patients have meanwhile been discharged from hospital. The last COVID-19 cases were confirmed by the Macau Health Bureau on February 4.

According to a DSC statement on Friday, for the time being the visitations to the prison will be subject to additional measures: one visit every two weeks only, each lasting no more than one hour, confined to the prison's visiting room equipped with handsets. Until further notice, visitors are not allowed to bring in items for the inmates.

Visitations to the juvenile detention centre will also be limited to a one-hour visit every fortnight. Visitors to the centre are not allowed to bring in items either.

Visitors must wear facemasks, have their temperatures checked and present their official health e-declarations to gain admission to the prison and centre.

According to official statistics, Macau's prison held 1,636 convicted and remand prisoners at the end of last year.
