The Macau Society for the Protection of Animals (ANIMA) yesterday challenged representatives of Macau Yat Yuen Canidrome Co. Ltd. to take part in a TV debate on the future of the greyhound racetrack in Fai Chi Kei.
Addressing a press conference held at ANIMA’s office in Nam Van, Albano Martins, who heads the group, said he and his fellow activists weren’t afraid of having a TV debate with the operator, adding that the company’s bosses should tell the public the reasons why they think that dog racing should continue in Macau.
Martins gave a variety of reasons why he believes that the racetrack should be closed for good, such as that the company doesn’t contribute much to the public coffers due to a low tax rate. He also said that the dogs’ barking was affecting the lives of residents living nearby and that the plot of land was needed for public facilities such as a car park.
