A local woman has been arrested for stealing a shopping trolley filled with goods and a wallet full of cash that was left outside a clothes shop, a Public Security Police (PSP) spokesperson said on Friday.

The suspect is a local resident surnamed Wong, 65, who is unemployed.

According to the spokesperson, a non-resident worker put her shopping trolley outside a shop in Rua da Emenda when she went in to buy clothes on March 5. When she left the shop, she found her trolley including her wallet had gone, and therefore reported the theft to the police. The goods and the cash in the wallet were worth about 8,900 patacas (US$1,112)

Upon investigation, the police was able to track down Wong on Thursday morning and arrested her in Rua de Tomé Pires.

According to the spokesperson, Wong confessed and told the police that after stealing the shopping trolley that day, she checked what’s inside while she was on a bus on her way home and found a wallet and took the cash from it, then discarded the wallet on the bus, but took the shopping trolley full of goods home.

The spokesperson said the police were able to retrieve the wallet with the help of the bus company, and also the stolen items and cash as well as the shopping trolley in Wong’s home in Ilha Verde district.

Wong has been transferred to the Public Prosecution Office (MP) for follow-up investigation, facing a theft charge.
