The Macau government opened today the city's 11th "quarantine hotel", the 132-room Jai Alai in the Outer Harbour area.
According to a statement by the Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO), the hotel has temporarily been designated for medical observation purposes in response to the COVID-19 epidemic.
The statement pointed out that the designated hotels - informally known as "quarantine hotels" - facilitate close monitoring of people's health conditions, allowing immediate follow-up action, testing and treatment if any problem arises, "in turn reducing the risk of transmission of [the novel coronavirus] disease within households and the community."
According to the statement, "the government will continue to look for more hotels than can be converted into medical observation facilities."
The 11 designated hotels provide a total of 2,535 rooms, according to MGTO data.
Macau had 122 hotels and guesthouses at the end of January, according to the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC).
