A 20-year-old non-resident worker from the mainland was arrested on Saturday for raping a neighbour who he threatened with a cleaver, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Choi Ian Fai said during a special press conference yesterday.

The suspect surnamed Zhang works as an electrical mechanic.

Choi said that Zhang and the victim are living in two adjacent rooftop shacks in Pátio da Estátua near Rua da Praia do Manduco. On Saturday night, Zhang knocked on the victim’s door to ask for help, claiming he did not know how to operate a washing machine. The victim ignored him but, according to Choi, the suspect’s sexual desire was aroused when he saw the victim wearing pyjamas.

He entered the victim’s shack through a window, took a cleaver from her kitchen to threaten her and then raped her without a condom.

According to Choi, Zhang also attempted to steal the victim’s valuables but gave up out of fear of being found out before forcing her into his shack. The victim called for help and a lower-floor resident rushed up to intervene. Zhang escaped and the victim reported the case to the police with the help of the resident.

Zhang went to the flat of a relative who persuaded him to surrender to the police. Zhang was arrested by the police when his relative drove him home around midnight.

Zhang was transferred to the Public Prosecution Office (MP) yesterday for further questioning, facing a rape charge. According to Article 157 of the Macau Penal Code, Zhang faces between three and 12 years behind bars.
