A local woman reported to the police on Wednesday that she had been cheated out of 300,000 yuan (340,000 patacas) in a purported online investment, PJ spokesman Choi Ian Fai said during a regular press conference yesterday.

According to Choi, the victim told the police that she got to know a man on March 9 through an online social app who urged her to download a mobile app called “FDI International” for an online investment service that was operating similar to gambling and Mark Six.

The victim invested 1,000 yuan and 10,000 yuan on March 11 and 24 respectively, earning a profit of 305 yuan and 1,418 yuan from these two transactions. Afterwards, the customer service ‘department’ of the investment company called and told her that they were running special promotions that would offer her an even higher profit.

The victim remitted a total of 300,000 yuan in four tranches on March 27, 30, 31 and April 1 through online banking to the bank account of the mainland-based investment company.

Choi said the victim was later informed by the customer service ‘staff’ that the investment had failed so that she could not get her money back. The victim finally realised that she had been cheated and reported the case to the police on Wednesday.
