Melco Resorts & Entertainment said in a statement yesterday that it has donated 500,000 facemasks to the government as part of its new round of supporting the community fight the novel coronavirus epidemic.

The gaming operator said in the statement that the facemasks would go to help vulnerable groups in the community, such as the elderly, single parent families, long-term patients, and medical support staff.

Quoting the company’s chairman and CEO, Lawrence Ho Yau Lung, the statement said that the combined efforts of the government, businesses and members of the public would enable the city overcome COVID-19 and become an ever-stronger and more united community.

According to the statement, the donation follows Melco’s recent initiatives to help minimise the socioeconomic impact of COVID-19, including hiring 100 local resident construction workers; a HK$20 million donation to Wuhan and Hubei; the setting up of the “Special Aid Fund for Workers in Need” in partnership with the Macau Federation of Trade Unions (FAOM); and a donation to the Women’s General Association of Macau for the purchase of facemasks and providing an allowance scheme to affected families.
