A Mongolian man was arrested on Sunday for an over month-long shoplifting spree  and a quantity of stolen goods has been seized, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Ho Ka Kit said in a regular press conference this week.

The 32-year-old suspect surnamed Batdelger told the police that he’s unemployed. Ho said on Tuesday that the suspect’s alleged accomplice from Mongolia was still on the run.

According to Ho, the police received a report from a cosmetics shop in Cotai last Saturday that three boxes of face cream worth more than 10,000 patacas had been stolen by two men. The shop’s staff filed the police report after checking its CCTV footage.

The police confirmed that the two men caught a bus from Cotai to the Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal area later that day. Afterwards, they went to a massage parlour there in the evening.

Ho said that Batdelger, who at that time was already under police surveillance, left the massage parlour on Sunday afternoon and went to a mall in Cotai where he wandered around. Police officers trailing him believed that he was about to shoplift again and arrested him at around 7 p.m. Batdelger showed the police his Mongolian passport. A box of men’s perfume worth 1,400 patacas was seized from him.

According to Ho, Batdelger confessed to having stolen the perfume from a shop in the mall earlier that day, but denied involvement in Saturday’s shoplifting case. He claimed that he did not know the other Mongolian suspect.

Ho said the PSP officers later confirmed that Batdelger and his Mongolian compatriot entered the city together via the Barrier Gate checkpoint on March 7. The police seized a large quantity of stolen clothing, shoes and other stolen goods in a locker at the massage parlour in the Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal area.

Batdelger was transferred to the Public Prosecution Office (MP) on Monday for further investigation, faces theft charges.
