A Hong Kong man was arrested for stealing 12,000 patacas in total from two restaurants in the city centre after midnight on Monday and Friday last week respectively, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Leng Kam Lon said during a special press conference yesterday.

The 47-year-old suspect surnamed Chu told the police he is unemployed.

According to Leng, Chu entered Macau in early March and subsequently rented a flat in Rua das Estalagens. The police received burglary reports from two restaurants last Monday and Friday in which, according to Leng, 12,000 patacas was stolen.

Leng did not say how much Chu stole from each restaurant.

Thanks to CCTV footage, the police discovered that Chu used a tool to pry open doors of the two restaurants to steal money from the cash registers in the wee hours when no-one was there and then walked back to his flat. Leng did not say what kind of tool Chu used to pry open the doors.

At noon on Monday the police arrested Chu outside the residential building where he was living.

Leng said Chu refused to cooperate with the police who found the clothes Chu wore during the two burglaries, a small amount of cash and casino chips worth 3,000 patacas. Leng said the police suspect that Chu spent some of the stolen money on the chips.

Chu was transferred to the Public Prosecution Office (MP) yesterday for follow-up investigation, facing an aggravated theft charge.

Evidence seized from the suspect’s flat such as clothes he wore during the two burglaries, pataca notes and casino chips are displayed during yesterday’s special press conference about the case at the pressroom of the Public Security Police (PSP).
