A male civil servant was arrested last week for having sexual intercourse with his wife about five times without her consent, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Chan Wun Man said during yesterday’s regular press conference.

The 38-year-old local suspect surnamed Tam works for the Health Bureau (SSM). His wife is a 37-year-old local resident. Chan said that the couple, who got married in 2009, live with their two children in a flat in Estrada Coronel Nicolau de Mesquita in Taipa.

According to Chan, the victim told the police that when she told her husband on May 11 that she wanted to divorce him, he claimed that she was having an affair, which she denied. Tam then pulled her hair, causing her to hit her head on the bedside table. The victim turned to the police for help last week, telling them that she was raped about five times by her husband at home between late May and Tuesday.

Chan said that the victim had spoken to a social worker on the phone about her predicament, who urged her to report the case to the police, which she did on Thursday.

According to Chan, PJ officers arrested Tam at his work place in the city centre later that day. Tam denied that he had hit and raped his wife. However, the police have checked the messages on the couple’s smartphones which revealed that Tam had attacked the victim and asked her for forgiveness.

Tam was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) on Friday, facing charges of rape and causing bodily harm, according to Chan, who did not say whether the suspect has been released on bail or been remanded in custody.
