A local man reported to the Judiciary Police (PJ) on Monday that he had fallen victim to a credit-for-sex scam and that he had been threatened by two men after buying gift cards worth 17,500 patacas for a “woman”, PJ spokesman Ho Chan Nam said during a regular press conference on Wednesday.

According to Chan, the jobless 41-year-old victim told the police that he met a “woman” through an online platform last month and they became online friends. The “woman” messaged him on May 18 that she was offering sex services and asked him to purchase a gift card worth 500 patacas from a convenience store for her service.

After the victim purchased the gift card and sent the password plus other information to the “woman”, two men called him and asked him to buy more cards. The men also threatened him that they would hurt his family if he did not follow their instructions.

Afterwards, the victim got scared and purchased a gift card worth 17,000 patacas from the convenience store. However, the two men continued to threaten him and asked him to purchase more gift cards. The victim finally reported the case to the police on Monday evening, according to Chan, who said that investigations into the case were continuing.
