An exhibition entitled “The Great Way is not difficult” showcases Chinese calligraphy in thin gold style by local artist Healy Lei Hio I at the Youth Art Exhibition and Performance Hall.

Lei told The Macau Post Daily in a phone interview last week that she graduated at Hou Kong Middle School and Sun Yat-sen University, SYSU. She has been deeply inspired by the secondary school’s emphasis in the Chinese cultural atmosphere and education, and started to develop her interest in Chinese calligraphy as well as traditional Chinese painting.  She is now a teacher in these two areas for individual classes and private training institutions.

The title “The Great Way is not difficult” is extracted from one of the Sutras “Faith in Mind”. Lei wants to express her thoughts through her writings displayed at the exhibition in the style of “thin gold” and to encourage others that difficulties can be solved as long as we do a good job, to focus and to follow the right direction. Lei added that she hopes to let the public have a deeper understanding of the thin gold calligraphy art.

Lei told The Macau Post Daily that she selected this typeface for the event as there are only a few local artists presented this style in the previous exhibitions. The thin gold body is a calligraphy style which was created by Chinese Emperor Huizong of the Song dynasty, who is a talented artist in calligraphy and painting. This typeface is with the basic structure of the regular script but it is not rigid, and makes people feel fresh and graceful. It is beautiful and popular in the mainland.

The exhibition runs until June 28 at The Youth Art Exhibition and Performance Hall in Praça do Tap Seac. It opens from noon to 8 p.m. every day (except Mondays). Admission is free.

As part of the government’s COVID-19 epidemic prevention measures, all visitors entering the venue must wear a facemask, have their temperature checked and present a digital health declaration.
