An illegal worker from the mainland was arrested on Monday for stealing a pair of trousers from a fashion store, Public Security Police (PSP) Wong Wai Chon said during a regular press conference on Wednesday.

The 43-year-old female suspect surnamed Xiong who holds an Exit-Entry Permit for Travelling to and from Hong Kong and Macau (colloquially known as a Two-Way Permit), told the police that she is a manicurist.

According to Wong, a sales assistant who works for a clothes shop in Largo de S. Domingos, reported to the police last Saturday she discovered that a pair of trousers worth 200 patacas had been stolen when she carried out a stock check. Thanks to the store’s CCTV footage, the police confirmed that a woman had tried on several shirts and trousers that day and left the store after returning items to the sales assistant.

The officers were able to track down Xiong on Monday and arrested her in a nail salon in Rua de Ponte e Horta where they seized the pair of trousers from her. Xiong admitted to the theft and told the police that she had put the pair of trousers in her shoulder bag while she was trying on the clothes she had taken into the changing room.

Upon investigation, police officers discovered that Xiong had been illegally working in the nail salon as a manicurist since March with a monthly salary of about 5,000 to 6,000 patacas. She claimed that she was only assisting her relatives in the salon. The officers were not able to contact Xiong’s employer or the person-in-charge of the shop. Xiong told the police that they are in the mainland and unable to come back to Macau. At the time of the press conference, the police were continuing their investigation.

Xiong was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) on Monday for further questioning, facing a theft charge as well as a charge for working illegally in Macau.
