The deaths of two more elderly patients has raised the COVID-19 tally in Hong Kong to 40, the special administration region's government announced today.

An 82-year-old woman, a resident of Tsz Wan Shan at the heart of an outbreak, died at Queen Elizabeth Hospital this morning.

The patient had suffered chronic illnesses and was admitted to hospital on July 9 because of a fever and cough.

Meanwhile, Prince of Wales Hospital reported the death also of an 82-year-old female patient.

The woman had lived in Ping Shek Estate in Choi Hung.

She was treated at the hospital's Accident and Emergency Department on July 19. She had a fever and her condition was stable at the time.

But her health had worsened since, and she passed away on Monday afternoon.

The hospital said frontline staff had been busy, which was why news of the death had not been made sooner.

Hong Kong's tally of confirmed infections stands at 3,589, local media reported today.

Macau has not recorded a new COVID-19 case for 39 days. All its 46 novel coronavirus disease patients have been discharged from hospital. The Macau Health Bureau (SSM) has said that 44 of the cases were imported, while it classified the remainder as "cases connected to imported cases."

The Macau government has bought over 100 million facemasks for the special administrative region's population of nearly 700,000 since late January. The "government facemasks" are sold at the fixed price of 80 avos (US$0.10) per piece to residents and non-resident workers.
