The Public Security Police (PSP) has announced that a mainland woman who is an overstayer in Macau gave birth to a baby at a local hospital – and her husband was arrested.

According to the statement, a member of the hospital staff informed the police last Monday about the matter. A PSP statement pointed out that someone told the police that the woman has been in Macau since mid-June. The woman’s husband, who is a Macau resident, was arrested for “sheltering an overstayer”, the statement said. According to Article 15 of Law 6/2004, sheltering an overstayer is punishable by up to two years behind bars.

According to the Identification Services Bureau’s website, Chinese nationals who were born in Macau before or after the establishment of the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR) and whose father or mother was legally residing in Macau or has obtained the right of abode in Macau at the time of their birth are qualified for residency in the city.

Moreover, according to the statement, PSP officers nabbed a 40-year-old male overstayer from the mainland in Praça de Ferreira do Amaral late last month. He had stayed at a hotel in Zape.

Last Tuesday, PSP officers nabbed another overstayer from Hong Kong who was also staying at that hotel, the statement said.
