A man has admitted that the side-view mirror of his dump truck scratched the surrounding wall of the Mandarin’s House when he was driving it through the narrow street and then drove off, a Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesperson said in a press conference yesterday.
The Mandarin’s House is one of the city’s UNESCO World Heritage sites of the Historic Centre of Macau.
According to the spokesman, the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) last Monday informed the police about highly visible scratches on the Mandarin’s House wall and requested the police to investigate, with the bureau saying that the repair work would cost 5,000 patacas.
The police found two scratches, measuring 20 to 30 centimetres in length , and CCTV footage shows that on August 1 at 9:27 a.m. a dump truck drove along Travessa de António da Silva when the vehicle’s right side-view mirror could be seen scratching the house’s wall, but the driver continued on his way.
The spokesman said that the police tracked down the driver and on Tuesday requested he present himself to a police station for investigation.
According to the spokesman, the driver is a 38-year-old resident surnamed Leong. He admitted to causing the damage, and the police have passed the case to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) facing charges for damaging property and evading responsibility.
