A man was arrested on Wednesday for using his smartphone to take upskirt videos and photos of women despite his wife’s objections, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesperson said during a regular press conference on Friday.
The suspect surnamed Hong, who is in his thirties, told the police that he is unemployed.
According to the spokesperson, a resident reported to the Public Security Police on July 29 that someone was taking upskirt photos of women at a bus stop in Avenida da Praia Grande. PSP officers rushed to the scene but were unable to find the suspect. The Public Security Police knew from social media reports that similar cases occurred there from time to time, and therefore deployed additional officers to patrol the area.
The spokesperson said PSP officers saw Hong in Avenida Dr. Mário Soares on Wednesday following women with his smartphone appearing to take photos or videos of them. Officers intercepted Hong and discovered a raft of upskirt photos and videos on Hong’s smartphone that he had taken earlier that day.
Under questioning, Hong admitted that he had been taking upskirt videos and photos since last year. He said that he had taken more than 100 photos and videos, but they were later found by his wife, who forced him to delete them.
However, he acknowledged that he recently resumed the habit until he was stopped by the police.
The Public Security Police found 16 photos and 18 videos on Hong’s smartphone and subsequently contacted six female victims aged between 28 and 36.
The women confirmed that they were the ones in the videos and photos.
The spokesperson said that the police were still looking for other possible victims.
Hong has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a charge of illegal photo-taking and filming, according to the spokesperson.
