Typhoon Higos, which resulted in the hoisting of Macau's highest storm warning signal No. 10 on August 19, damaged about 1,000 trees, public broadcaster Radio Macau reported today, citing Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) officials.
According to the unnamed officials, 131 old trees were damaged by Higos, two of which were downed by the typhoon.
The officials were also quoted as saying that the post-Higos clean-up operation has so far resulted in the collection of 300 tonnes of brushwood, while 130 damaged trees needed to be straightened.
Apart from trees, Higos spared Macau major damage and serious injuries, and flooding turned out to be less severe than forecast. However, residents said they found Higos "scarily noisy".
In 2017, lethal Super Typhoon Hato damaged more than 20,000 trees in Macau, according to official data. Hato killed 10 people in Macau.
