The Macau International Marathon will be held as scheduled on December 6, the organisers announced yesterday.
However, the organising committee stressed in a statement that "measures will be adopted according to the [COVID-19] pandemic situation."
The committee pledged that "in order to provide a safe condition" for the runners, the organisers "will pay close attention to the COVID-19 pandemic and adopt preventive measures according to the guidelines by the Health Bureau."
The committee held a press conference on Friday about the event, which is titled-sponsored by gaming operator Galaxy Entertainment Group (GEG) for the 17th year. The conference was attended by Sports Bureau (ID) President Pun Weng Kun, General Association of Athletics of Macau President Ma Iao Hang and GEG Director Philip Cheng Yee-sing.
The 39th edition of the annual event offers 12,000 places - 1,400 for the marathon, 4,800 for the half-marathon and 5,800 for the mini-marathon. Two-day online and on-site registration for the three races ends tomorrow.
Last year's women's marathon was won by Esther Karami of Kenya. Tafese Abebe of Ethiopia was the winner of the men's marathon.
