UA Galaxy Cinemas at Galaxy Macau – the city’s only major multiplex – will reopen on September 28, after having been closed since February due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Galaxy Macau said on its social media page yesterday that the cineplex at its integrated resort in Cotai is set to reopen on September 28 so people can again enjoy blockbusters with 4K laser projection along with five hours free parking.

The statement said that comprehensive preventive measures against the novel coronavirus would be in place at the multi-screen theatre to ensure visitors have a “carefree experience”.

On its official website, Galaxy said that every other seat would be left vacant for physical distancing, and cinema chair armrests would be disinfected between screenings, while the chairs would regularly undergo steam cleaning for in-depth sanitization.

In addition, the website says that all the theatres will be deep-cleaned through an electrostatic misting treatment each day.

However, as of last night the website didn’t yet have a film schedule for the upcoming reopening of the cinema.

The government ordered the temporary closure of casinos and other entertainment venues on February 5 when the city recorded 10 COVID-19 cases.

The order was lifted for casinos on February 20 and for non-gaming entertainment venues in March subject to a string of COVID-19 prevention and control measures.

Two of the local cinemas – Cinema Alegria (more widely known by its Chinese name – Wing Lok) and Cineteatro – have subsequently reopened. Government-owned Cinematheque•Passion also reopened recently with new operators, while UA Galaxy Cinemas remained shut.

Asked by The Macau Post Daily recently about the prolonged closure of the popular multiplex, a Galaxy executive told The Macau Post Daily that “people’s health always comes first” for the company headed by Hong Kong tycoon Lui Che-woo.
