A woman was arrested on Monday for falsely accusing her husband of being part of sham marriage, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Cheung Kam Fai said at a regular press conference on Wednesday.
The suspect surnamed Wei, who is in her forties, is from the mainland.
According to Cheong, Wei reported to the police on Monday that she has lived in a sham marriage since 2017 with her local husband. She told the police that she had paid him 100,000 patacas as a “deposit” to marry him and when she obtained her Macau ID card, she would pay him an additional 200,000 patacas.
Wei claimed that she paid her husband 100,000 patacas in 2017 for registering the bogus marriage, and she also alleged that he asked her to pay him 200,000 patacas in the middle of this year but she said that she had told him that she didn’t have enough money. So, she claimed, her husband filed for divorce in May and she therefore was unable to obtain her Macau ID card.
PJ officers contacted Wei’s husband to assist in the investigation. Her husband told the police that he married Wei in 2017 in Macau but later found out that she’s addicted to gambling and never changed her habit despite his repeated warnings. So he decided to file for divorce in May. He also told the police that he never received 100,000 patacas from Wei, according to Cheong.
Under questioning, Wei admitted that she reported a false case to the police. She told the police that her husband had got himself “another woman” and asked her to move out, and that’s why she falsely accused her husband of living with her in a fake marriage, Cheong said.
Wei was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) on Tuesday, facing a slanderous denunciation charge, according to Cheong. According to Article 329 of the Macau Penal Code, Wei faces up to three years behind bars.
