A local man was arrested on Monday for drunk driving, evading responsibility and driving without a licence, Public Security Police (PSP) spokeswoman Lai In Hong said during a regular press conference on Wednesday.
The suspect surnamed Kuok, who is in his twenties, told the police that he is a businessman.
According to Lai, a resident called the police at about 1:30 a.m. on Monday to report a traffic accident in Estrada da Marginal Ilha Verde. When traffic officers arrived at the scene they saw that the front of a heavy motorcycle and the left side of a heavy-duty vehicle parked at the roadside had been damaged. They also saw Kuok with injured hands at the scene. Kuok denied that he was the rider of the damaged motorcycle, but there was no one else at the scene, Lai said.
According to Lai, the officers then contacted the man who reported the accident. The man told the officers that when he was driving past the scene earlier he saw a rider fall off a motorcycle after crashing into a heavy-duty vehicle. He came forward to provide assistance as he realised that the rider was injured in the accident, but the latter told him that he didn’t need any help and even asked him not to inform the police. However, since the man was injured the witness decided to call the police. The officers also confirmed that the appearance and clothing of the motorcyclist described by the witness matched Kuok’s.
Lai said the officers noticed that Kuok reeked of alcohol and conducted a breathalyser test on him. The test showed that Kuok’s alcohol concentration was 2.03 grammes of alcohol per litre of blood. Kuok was taken to hospital for out-patient treatment. Under questioning, Kuok finally admitted that he was the rider. He told the police that he had crashed into the vehicle because he was drunk and was afraid that he would be accused of committing the offence of driving under the influence (DUI) so at the beginning he denied that he was the rider. The officers later discovered that Kuok did not have a driving licence and had borrowed the motorcycle from a friend.
Kwok faces charges of drunk driving, evading responsibility and driving without a licence, according to Lai.
