A Chinese calligraphy exhibition entitled “Tang People – Tang Poetry: Maoming and Macau Calligraphy Art Exhibition and Poems Saloon” is being held at the Rui Cunha Foundation Gallery. The event is organised by the Macau-Maoming Overseas Friendship Association in conjunction with the Rui Cunha Foundation, the Macau Flora Garden Poets Group and the Maoming Calligraphers Association.

The city of Maoming located in the western part of Guangdong province is well-known for its strong cultural atmosphere, according to the statement. Since the establishment of the Maoming Calligraphers Association 36 years ago, many important calligraphy masters have joined the association in large numbers, where they have been actively promoting the concept of “calligraphy for thousands of families”, with the intent of spreading this traditional Chinese art among the new generations, the statement noted.

The exhibition displays more than 30 works of Tang poetry by members of the Maoming Calligraphers Association, as well as several Tang-style metrical poems by members of the Macau Flora Garden Poets Group, the statement points out.

Metrical poetry has recognisable pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables.

In addition to promoting cultural exchanges between Maoming and Macau, the exhibition also aims to enhance residents’ interest in traditional poetry culture, metrical poetry in particular, to appreciate the beauty of the connotations of poetry and improve their artistic accomplishments, apart from striving to enrich local schools’ cultural and artistic activities, according to the statement.

The exhibition is being held until Saturday at the Rui Cunha Foundation Gallery at 749, Avenida da Praia Grande daily until Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. On Saturday it opens from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
