The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) has set up 18 compacting rubbish skips in Areia Preta district, replacing around 300 conventional dumpsters that had been used for the collection of waste generated from residential estates there since 2018 when the government’s underground waste collection system in the district ceased operations, according to an IAM statement on Friday.
The statement pointed out that the underground waste collection system in Areia Preta district, which ceased operations in 2018, served around 53,000 residents from 126 buildings in the district. The statement noted that since the system ceased operations in 2018, the bureau had arranged for the city’s waste collection concession, Macau Residvue System Company (CSR), to provisionally provide around 300 conventional 1,100-litre dumpsters to residential buildings that were previously served by the underground waste collection system.
According to the statement, every day when a dustcart arrived near a building, workers moved dumpsters from the building’s rubbish chamber to the lorry. The statement said that with the aim of solving the adverse hygiene issue resulting from this waste collection practice, the bureau has chosen 20 locations, which are near the previous collection points of the now-defunct underground waste collection system, for the setting-up of compacting rubbish skips.
According to the statement 18 compacting rubbish skips are already in place with two more to come into operation at a later date.
The statement noted that the capacity of a compacting rubbish skip is equivalent to up to 30 conventional 1,100-litre dumpsters.
Meanwhile, the statement also pointed out that there are a total of 124 compacting rubbish skips, and 122 enclosed rubbish chambers, across the city.
The statement said that Macau’s number of conventional dumpsters has been decreased from a peak of 1,600 to only 104 now, due to their replacement with compacting rubbish skips and enclosed waste chambers.
