The month-long 36th Macao International Music Festival (MIMF) will run from October 4 to November 4, with multiple “prominent programmes” being “specially recommended”, the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) said in a statement yesterday.
The four recommended prominent programmes in this year’s festival, themed “And the Stars Shine”, are “Leonidas Kavakos and the ApollΩn Ensemble”, “Mariinsky Orchestra”, “Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center”, and the “Mariza and the Macao Chinese Orchestra” closing performance, according to the statement.
The statement said that “Leonidas Kavakos and the ApollΩn Ensemble” will take place at the Macau Cultural Centre’s (CCM) Grand Auditorium on October 11 and will feature the Greek violinist performing with five string players and a harpsichordist from the ensemble.
The Mariinsky Orchestra from Russia, which was met with an “enthusiastic response” during their first performance in Macau in 2016, is set to return to CCM’s Grand Auditorium on October 26 and 27 to present classics by great Russian composers such as Prokofiev, Shostakovich and Rachmaninoff, according to the statement.
The statement added the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, an ensemble from the US with musicians from different parts of the world, will perform at CCM’s Small Auditorium on October27 and 28, presenting pieces by composers such as Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Mahler, and Schubert. Moreover, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center’s co-artistic directors Wu Han and David Finckel, will respectively host a piano and a cello masterclass on October27.
The three programmes each feature a pre-show talk an hour before they start, the statement said. Registration for the respective talks, as well as the masterclass on October 27, can be done through one’s Macau One Account, the statement said.
Moreover, Mariza and the Macao Chinese Orchestra, the festival’s closing performance, will be presented at The Londoner Theatre in Cotai on November 4 by Portuguese Fado diva Mariza and the Macao Chinese Orchestra under the baton of Tsung Yeh.
