Gongbei Customs announced in a statement yesterday that its officers seized around 51 kilogrammes of bird’s nest at Zhuhai’s checkpoint of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge (HZMB).
According to the statement, at 10 p.m. on August 23, Gongbei customs officers at the Zhuhai checkpoint of the cross-delta bridge noticed a double-plate vehicle’s driver acting suspiciously. A follow up inspection revealed 49 boxes of bird’s nest weighing 51 kilogrammes were found hidden under the seats and in the boot.
In the statement, Gongbei Customs reminded the public that bird’s nest products (excluding tinned varieties that have undergone commercial sterile processing) are listed in the “Catalogue of Animals, Plants, and Other Quarantine Items Prohibited from Being Carried or Mailed into the [mainland part of the] People’s Republic of China.” Non-quarantined bird’s nests pose a risk of transmitting highly pathogenic avian influenza and other animal diseases. Concealing such items to evade customs oversight and transporting articles prohibited from entry constitutes smuggling. Severe cases may lead to criminal liability.
Zhuhai Customs seizes 52 used mobile phones
Meanwhile, Zhuhai Gongbei Customs announced in a separate statement yesterday that its officers seized 52 used smartphones at Qingmao checkpoint.
According to the statemen, at 11p.m. on August 23, customs officers at the pedestrian border checkpoint noticed a female exhibiting an abnormally stiff gait. A follow up inspection revealed 52 used mobile phones wrapped around her thighs.
In the statement, Gongbei Customs reminded the public that according to relevant regulations, evading customs supervision by hiding or bringing goods subject to duties into the mainland constitutes smuggling. If the circumstances are severe enough to constitute a crime, criminal liability will be pursued.
