A drunken motorcycle rider who refused to submit to a third breathalyser test after the previous tests had failed to confirm his alcohol concentration, was taken to the public Conde de S. Januário Hospital where a doctor suspected that he was intoxicated, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Cheuk Kou Chi said at a press conference yesterday.
Cheuk said the suspect surnamed Wong is in his fifties and told the police that he is jobless.
According to Cheuk, the police received a report on Saturday night about a man “wobbling” along on a motorbike near Praça de Ferreira do Amaral. Cheuk noted that the man had fallen off the motorbike but managed to get on it again and kept riding.
Cheuk said that later that day police officers intercepted Wong sitting on his motorcycle with the engine turned on in Avenida de Horta e Costa. When asked by the police about what had happened before, he denied that he had fallen off his motorbike at Praça de Ferreira do Amaral.
Cheuk noted that Wong was reeking of alcohol but two subsequent breathalyser tests failed to obtain his alcohol concentration. Wong refused a third test and was very uncooperative even after the officers warned that his behaviour could amount to the offence of ignoring a police order, Cheuk said.
According to Cheuk, Wong was then taken to the public hospital for examination, where a doctor concluded that Wong’s condition matched the symptoms of acute alcohol intoxication.
Wong has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Officer (MP), facing charges of drink-driving, dangerous driving and violating a police order, Cheuk said, adding that Wong will also be fined for riding his motorcycle with the lights off and riding on a pavement.
