Energy Sector Development Office (GDSE) Director Hoi Chi Leong said yesterday the government was checking if local power utility CEM’s plans to build a natural gas power plant would lead to an increase in electricity charges.

Hoi made the remarks on the sidelines of the launching ceremony in Praça do Tap Seac of this year’s Energy Saving Week.

The annual event organised by the office aimed at raising residents’ energy-saving awareness will hold a series of activities throughout the week, including an hour-long lights-off event today, which will see the non-essential lights turned off on the city’s three bridges, public facilities as well as hotels and casinos.
