Macau recorded 5.89 million visitor arrivals last year, a year-on-year drop of 85.0 percent, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) announced today.

Macau's tourism and gaming sectors have been severely affected by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the local economy. Macau's first novel coronavirus case was confirmed in late January 2020. Foreigners without a local residency permit have been barred from entering Macau since March last year.

In 2019, Macau recorded 39.4 million visitor arrivals.

Last year, Macau recorded 3.07 million same-day and 2.82 million overnight visitors, down by 85.2 percent and 84.9 percent respectively.

Visitors' average length of stay rose by 0.2 day year-on-year to 1.4 days.

Mainland Chinese and Hongkongers accounted for 80.6 percent and 14.2 percent of all visitor arrivals last year respectively.

Last month's number of visitor arrivals grew by 3.6 percent month-on-month to 659,407. However, the number was down by 78.6 percent year-on-year.
