The Labour Affairs Bureau (DSAL) and ByteDance yesterday joined hands and launched an internship programme open to applications from university students who graduated in 2019 and 2020.

According to a statement provided by the bureau yesterday during its internship launch and sharing event at the Macau Young Entrepreneur Incubation Centre in Nape, ByteDance is providing 48 vacancies for local graduates. The statement said that the internship offers positions in nine different fields.

The statement said that during the internship, the company would provide a 2,000 to 4,000 pataca monthly subsidy while the government would provide an additional 5,000 pataca subsidy per month. The statement said that the duration of the programme is three months and the deadline for application is February 28. The statement said that in early April, the company would inform the applicants of the results.

One of the potential candidates, Lori Lei Lok I, told reporters that she graduated in 2019 and after taking a short course in 2020, she has been unable to find a job for a year. She said that she studied Chinese-English translation and was interested in working in ByteDance’s creative marketing field. She said that due to the COVID-19 pandemic she did not get any replies from the 10 jobs she applied for throughout the year.

Another potential candidate, Wong Lei Lei, who studied in Sweden, is a digital marketing master’s degree graduate. She said she has always been curious about the operation behind China tech-giants such as ByteDance and Alibaba. Wong said she would be interested in working in the mainland for a few years, adding that she was confident that she would be a competitive candidate for the role. She also pointed out that technology companies in Macau usually require an engineering background, adding she had been unable to get a job in the midst of the pandemic.

According to the event, the internships will be held in Guangdong and Fujian provinces.

ByteDance Ltd. is a multinational internet technology company headquartered in Beijing. It was founded in 2012. ByteDance is reportedly worth over US$100 billion.

ByteDance is the developer of the video-sharing social networking services and apps TikTok and Douyin, the Chinese-specific counterpart to TikTok. The company reportedly employs about 60,000 people.
