A 27-year-old grandson slapped his 80-year-old grandmother for being “too noisy” and disturbing his rest, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Chan Wun Man said yesterday during a regular press conference.

Chan said that the grandmother lives with her husband, oldest son, daughter-in-law and two grandsons in a subsidised homeownership scheme (HOS) flat in Taipa. Chan noted that the grandmother’s oldest son and his family are from the mainland and only recently moved in with the grandmother in Macau. Chan pointed out that the grandmother has a sickness that causes her to mumble and also needs assistance while walking.

According to Chan, the grandmother was wandering around the living room with her walking stick, while mumbling on February 9 at 7 p.m. Chan said the daughter-in-law then dragged the grandmother into the latter’s bedroom and told her to go to bed early, but the grandmother was not willing to go to bed so early. Chan said that the grandson then barged in and slapped his grandmother. Chan pointed out that the daughter-in-law immediately tried to separate the two.

Chan said that the grandmother went to her other son’s flat and told him about the incident the next day. Chan noted that after the son heard about the incident, he and the grandmother went to the police to report the case on February 10 at 3 p.m.

Chan said the police soon after picked-up the grandson who admitted to the crime. Chan said that the grandson insisted that it was a “one-time incident”, adding that he had got “agitated” because his grandmother was “too noisy” and “disturbing” his rest.

According to Chan, however, under questioning, the grandmother said that three months ago the grandson also attacked her, adding that the attack broke the grandmother’s rib and she was hospitalised. Chan said that the grandmother kept quiet about the incident until the questioning by the police.
