A fire broke out in a residential flat near Rua do Campo last night, causing four minor injuries, the Fire Services Bureau (CB) said.
The four injured comprise a local resident and three non-resident workers from Vietnam, the bureau said.
Firefighters suspect that the fire was caused by electrical overload as too many electrical appliances were using an extension block in the flat, according to the bureau.
The fire broke out at around 8 p.m. in the flat on the second floor of Tong Heng San Chun Building in Travessa do Padre Soares, the narrow alley running from near the Consulate General of Portugal in Rua de Pedro Nolasco da Silva to close to the McDonald’s outlet in Rua do Campo.
Firefighters rushed to the scene and extinguished the blaze within 15 minutes. About 60 residents self-evacuated during the fire, the bureau said.
According to the bureau, a 20-year-old local woman, who lives on the fourth floor, felt unwell after inhaling smoke and was taken to the private Kiang Wu Hospital for treatment.
A 32-year-old female non-resident worker from Vietnam sustained abrasions on her right buttock after falling when she was self-evacuating. She declined to be taken to hospital for further medical examination after receiving basic treatment from paramedics, the bureau said.
A 38-year-old male Vietnamese sustained contusions on his right thumb after falling when he was self-evacuating. He was taken to the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre for treatment, the bureau said.
According to the bureau, a 41-year-old Vietnamese woman received basic treatment from paramedics after feeling dizzy, after which she declined to be taken to hospital for further medical examination.
The three Vietnamese live on the second floor of the building.
Fire engines could not enter the narrow alley so they needed to park in Rua do Campo and Rua de Pedro Nolasco da Silva during the fire-fighting operation, resulting in a traffic jam.
